February 08 Thing you Should know
The Who??Elika Rivera also known as Melodious De Lykablesz or Simply Lyka was born in Manila, Philippines (October 29 1988). She is Tri-ligual, and can speak English, Tagalog & Spanish. She's a talented actress, dancer/choreographer. Not only a singer/rapper also a talented songwriter, musician & communicator.
At the age of 9 Lyka joined a choir at school in which she was booted-out off because her voice drowned-out the other singers. "I had a very mature & strong voice for my age and it was hard for me to flow with the other vocals, because I was trained vocally in such a strict way. I was a microphone freak, I loved the spotlight & attention because no kid can do trills or have vibrato like mine. Long before I could think, I knew that I want to be an entertainer when I grow-up." At Age 11 Lyka started playing the piano & also started to write her own song lyrics. "One day at Intermediate school there was an audition for 'The Band' ( it was called 'Overdose') so I decided to go for audition for it, just cause I know I can sing. My music teacher Ms Cranston told me that I sing like an angel. I was very much impacted by what she said, although I didnt made the cut for the band. I grew from that experience. The next day I thought to myself its better going solo than being in a band... So I bought a guitar, and decided that I can be the one-girl-band of my own." At age 16 then moved on and learnt to play drums and is currently pursuing as a drummer for filipina band 'Tagalog po Kami' while settling in her solo work. "It's about prioritising what I do. I really want to put my studies first. It sinked into me these past few months that talent is not gonna make me successful, I also need education. Talent is not enough to become successfull, if I don't have the smarts to know how to use my goods, then I can't sell my what I produce." At 17 she developed her talent of rapping and became more serious about what to do with the talent. "My mother thought I shouldnt rap because it wasnt lady like, but I still did it anyway. I told my mother that I had a rap solo at church she was freaking out! She was thinking that Im gonna be a gangster." But no, it was the genuine love for music that driven her to become the next female rapper. Her lyrics contain a lot of her personal life, being the only child always being financially fit and never knowing what it is like to struggle. She says "Everyone has got a ghetto story, Mine is a bit different though. I never really knew what it was like to struggle, I never understood what it was to struggle in my life." Other lyrics are about her heritage as a Filipino & the things she missed out in her country. She writes about being the Filipina girl who never fit in the filipino community because of the lack of knowledge she had in her own language (tagalog). "I only got serious about learning Tagalog when I was 16, when I found out we were going to visit Philippines again. I was working so hard, it was insane! Other filipinos just loved to laugh at me." Suddenly one day Lyka had am amazing suprise that shocked her friends & family as she performed her own rap lyrics in tagalog at a karaoke night with other Filipino friends. It was not only in tagalog but it was a rap. Lyka is the granddaughter of Filipina actress Juvy Cachola who worked on films with Sampaguita pictures in movies such as: Batang Iskwater, Mga (1964) ,Double Wedding (1968) , Nobody's Child (1970) , Tugtuging bukid (1962), Dance'o'rama (1963), Kaming mga talyada (1962), Gintong alaala (1970), and Dugo Nga Vampira. Also in the family tree of entertainers, her Tita (aunt) Febe was one of the original members in Philippines Finest music ensemble 'The Company'. She is also an extended relative of Philippines Pop-artist Jamie Rivera & Hawaiian councilmember Romy M. Cachola. Back in the Philippines, at the ages of 5-6 she had trained at a music school that specializes in developing outstanding performance artists. Ryan Cayabyab The Music Studio which was run by Emmy Cayabyab. Wife of Ryan Cayabyab, Executive and Artistic Director of The San Miguel Foundation for the Performing Arts also one-third of the judges in Philippine Idol. But then departed in 1997 as the Family moved onto live in New Zealand. In Late 2005, Jay-Jay Ortega of Too Phunked Music, (PH) discovered Lyka at a karaoke competition. Jay-Jay saw something in Lyka that he has never seen from other pinay artist:: X-factor, Originality, Style, Mystery & Soul. He says that "Lyka can sing a song and bring-out the soul and heart out of the lyrics. She's a refreshing filipina performer, She's so energetic, emotional & entertaining ... I can see her as being a Miss Pure Energy (in regards to Gary V). She'd do so well if she was in the Philippines, since she's got a name already." Too Phunked Music's CEO Jayne Faustino agreed to sign the young talent under a contract but Lyka didn't want to make a move & declined as she said "If I had signed, it would mean I would have to move back into The Philippines as much as I love music, I love my family even more. Family is always first for me, I will not leave them here in NZ. I mean, they have work their asses of to get me out of the hard life in Philippines and then going-back, I don't think thats the type of repayment they deserve, it's not the type of sacrifice im willing to take". Lyka made a right decision in not budging to sign the contract, for now she is in a Pinoy hip/hop rap crew called P'noize taking up as the leading vocalis & leading Lady of P'Noize entertainment. |
